Busby Free Church (1876)

"I arranged for a fortnight's meetings in September last, to be conducted by one of the agents of the Evangelization Society. Toward the close of the time the interest was so deep and widespread that I arranged for other three weeks. During these five weeks the church was open from 7 till 10.30 p.m.- sometimes even later. Both before and during the meetings a remarkable spirit of prayer was poured out on the people, which showed itself in the numerous and urgent requests for prayer. From the very beginning the meetings were largely attended - as many as two hundred being present night after night in their working clothes, besides many others of higher social position......On the Tuesday of the third week, the meeting was such that no one will ever be able to forget it. There were about four hundred present, and every one of these remained to the after-meeting, while nearly two hundred stayed for enquiry. During the third week whole households were awakened and professed to accept the Saviour. Such was the impression made on the community that you could go up to any man you met and ask how it was with his soul, and he would in no wise be surprised. At the beginning of the fifth week I asked those who believed they had been brought to the Saviour at the meetings to send me their names and addresses. In response, 168 names were sent in—8 belonging to my own congregation, and 86 having no connection with us. The converts ranged from fifteen to seventy years of age, and belonged to all grades of society."
