Pendeen - Robert Aitken (1845-1873)




Robert Aitken designed this church on the plan of the ancient church at Iona. He was not only the architect but also the master builder and local volunteers were the builders and carpenters.

Aitken was an unusual man; he went from being Church of England to Methodist and back to the Church of England. He was almost a Catholic, supporting the tractarian movement and yet he was an evangelical who wanted people to be 'born again'. He was instrumental in the conversion of William Haslam (see this website)and was his close friend. He was a powerful, powerful preacher and revival followed him around,
