Lydbrook Baptist Church (1862)

LYBROOK, Gloucestershire. -Fifteen believers in Jesus, the fruits of & gracious visitation from the Lord, followed the example of their Master in baptism, on Lord's-day, March 9. They were baptized at Lay's Hill, by the Rev. J Camp, of Ross. Lydbrook is an old station, as may be seen by the "Handbook," and is supplied by friends from Cinderford and Colebrook. The Lydbrook brethren have recently bought the old chapel, and are about having it renovated and enlarged. They stand in need of pecuniary help. There are many persons anxiously inquiring after the way of salvation for their souls, and ere long we hope to report another, and another baptizing scene.

Another correspondent says: —"A blessed work has begun at this place. The chapel is crowded night after night, the voice of prayer and praise is heard in scores of houses, and the working men are heard singing praises to God as they come from their labour and approach the house of prayer. Truly this village is receiving showers of blessing.

There are many now before the church, and we expect in a few days to hear that more will follow their Master through the flood. To God be all the glory!"

LAY'S HILL. -A gracious awakening has taken place here and at Coppit's Wood, and many sin-smitten souls are seeking after salvation - the little hills are rejoicing on every side, and the inhabitants of the rock are singing praise to God. On Lord's-day, Feb. 16, Mr Camp baptized four disciples.

Additional Information

I am confused by the relationship of the towns here. The church marked was not built until 1864. The current website says, "The church was founded as an outreach of Leys Hill Baptist Church in 1857 (formerly in Walford, just over the border in Hereford)" I do not know where the church met in 1862. There were several baptised at Cinderford and Colebrook, so I assume that this whole area was particularly involved in the 1859-64 revival.
