Search

When you click on the ‘Search’ tab a map of the UK will appear. You will see some filter options to the right.

Filters

These will give you the option to choose a point on the map and search within a radius of that point (I recommend you use this), search on a period; a county (choose from a list) or a person (choose from a list).

  •  Search by Radius: You will see on the map a red marker on Anglesey; if you click on the centre of this marker and keep your finger on your ‘mouse’ you will be able to drag the marker wherever you want.  Choose the town or area of the UK that you want to look at and then let the marker drop.  Then go to the ‘select range’ tab to the right of the map and choose from the list; say 10 miles and click on the ‘Search by Radius’ tab.  You will see on the map all the sites that we have so far identified within a ten mile radius of the place you have chosen.  To see details of a site either click on the centre of a cross and then click on ‘Learn more’ or click on any of the list below the map.
  • Period: You can search a period of years.  If you want to search from 1604 to 1654 just put the years in the boxes, click on the circle next to ‘Year’ and press ‘Search by Filter’.  All the sites we have relating to this period will appear on the map, with a list appearing below the map.  To see details of a site either click on the centre of a cross and then click on ‘Learn more’ or click on any of the list below the map.
  • County: Click on the circle next to ‘County’ and from the drop down list choose a county and click ‘Search by Filter’ and all the sites we have in that county will appear on the map.  To see details of a site either click on the centre of a cross and then click on ‘Learn more’ or click on any of the list below the map.
  • Person: Click on the circle next to ‘Person Involved’ and from the drop down list click on a person, click on the circle and click ‘Search by Filter’.  You will then see on the map a marker representing all the sites relating to the person you chose and there will be a list of these sites below the map. To see details of a site either click on the centre of a cross and then click on ‘Learn more’ or click on any of the list below the map.

Google Map

If you have chosen a significant number of sites there will be a lot of crosses on the map, so it will be difficult to click on a cross as sometimes several will be on top of one another.  In order to clarify the situation use the bar on the top left hand of the map.

First of all double click on the part of the map that you want to view; this will centralise the map so that when you get closer the crosses that you want to see will stay in the centre of the map.  Unfortunately you do have to adjust the map a little the further up the bar you go.  You adjust the map either by clicking on the map and dragging it; or double clicking to centralise or by using the arrows above the bar in the top left hand corner of the map.

If you click on the tab on the vertical bar you can drag it up or down to see more or less detail on the map.  If you drag the tab up the bar the markers will separate wider and wider the further up the bar you go.  When the tab is at the top of the bar you will be able to see exactly where the site is, usually to the nearest few feet.

Location Details

Having clicked on ‘Learn More’ or on one of the Locations below the map (that appear in date order) you will arrive at the Location detail where the first thing you will see is the map with just one cross on it.  If you use the navigation bar that appears when the cursor is on the map you can go right down to the most detailed map.  This cross is centralised so you will not have to adjust the map as you drill down.

You will find some history of the site and perhaps a photo.  Please forgive the quality of the photos as we only have a small digital camera and we are not professionals.  You will also find a list of Related Sites in date order that will show all the sites relating to the person you were searching and you can click on any one of them to see the Location detail.  Above Related Sites you will see Biographies and if we have a biography on the person you are searching then their name will appear under the title.  Should you at any time want to go back to the empty map then press ‘New Search’ on the yellow bar.

Under ‘Directions’ you will see ‘Mapquest Directions’; if you want to get directions of how to get to the site from your home or anywhere else, just click here and you will be taken to Mapquest’s website.  Click on ‘Directions To’ and enter your country and post code and the address and post code of the site (you will find these immediately above ‘Directions’ on the Locations page under ‘Address’.)
