Deerness - Orkney (1861)

On Wednesday, the 26th, being the day on which the weekly prayer meeting at Twatt is held, there was a very large attendance, the Free church being filled in every part. The Reverend Mr Garson began the service by praise and prayer after which the Reverend Mr Souter gave a narrative of what had come under his observation in Sanday and Deerness. A very deep impression seemed to be made by the recital of the circumstance in attending the awakening in both places mentioned, several being in tears and others not able to give utterance to their feelings. Many young people were present and some of the boys seem much moved.

In this parish the Spirit of God has been very manifestly working during these past few weeks. Deeply impressed with the conviction that the Spirit of God was moving on the face of the parish, the Rev. Mr Robb sought to keep the subject of the Spirit's work before the minds of his people. He accordingly invited the Rev. Mr Souter, of Firth, to come to Deerness on that evening and address them on what had come under his observation in Sanday. At the close, of his address cries of distress were heard, and the people flocked into the church.
