Drill Hall, Carlisle - D L Moody (1892)

CARLISLE.

No words can possibly convey fully the amount of blessing God has graciously bestowed upon our city and neighbourhood through his honoured servant. Eternity alone will reveal that. The campaign was opened on Friday afternoon, last week, by a most powerful address by Mr Moody on Tit. ii. 11 to a very large audience. The evening address, on the text Gal. vi. 7, 8, was considered the most searching word spoken here. The drink traffic got a fearful blow, and, if faces are to be taken as the expression of hearts, there were many whose consciences must have been very sore and torn. Christians and non-Christians received a very direct message.

The most helpful service, giving as it did encouragement to many a down-hearted Christian, was that of Sunday morning. Many are now praising God for the very blessed message delivered on "the outpouring of the Holy Spirit for service" which followed most suitably the address of Saturday night on "The Filling of the Spirit." The Sunday afternoon meeting, announced to commence at three, was the largest of all the series. The Drill Hall, which holds about fifteen hundred people, was packed by 2.15, and an adjournment was made to the racecourse. These two permanent stands were used for the evangelist and the choir. By three o'clock between four and five thousand people assembled to hear the glad tidings of salvation. At an after-meeting in the Drill Hall, about one thousand were present, and many, in response to the call from Mr Moody, stood up to be prayed for.

The last meeting was held on Sunday night when the Drill Hall was again filled to its utmost capacity long before the time, an overflow meeting being held in the Theatre, close by. Mr Burke did much by his solo singing, which was clear and sweet. The prayers of God's children follow these brethren, that He may richly bless them in all their work.

From, "The Christian," August 11th, 1892.
