New/Old Swindon - Salvation Army

Date: 1882  ·  Place: New Swindon, Wiltshire  ·  Type: National well

NEW SWINDON (Capt Myers) -On Saturday night, we mustered in the open air, forty in ranks, headed by a big drum. We had been predicting good results; and hundreds turned out to witness us go through the town. Some scorned us, some laughed, and some thanked God The town was all astir. Scores followed us to the Barracks, where we had a splendid Free-and-Easy. Sunday was a time of marvellous power. Drum out all day: seventy in ranks at night, five tambourines and a number of fifes; the town was taken by surprise. Our Hall was full, and seventeen souls came out to the Merey-seat.

OLD SWINDON (Capt. Ball) -J. M. writes: "The Soldiers at this Station are still marching on to victory. Since our last report, we have had some blessed times; Soldiers all united for the Salvatien of Old Swindon. Grand meetings every night; souls every meeting. Sunday the best ever held in Old Swindon: Hall packed, not half large enough for Sunday hights. At the close, ten souls, making forty-four for the fortnight."

NEW SWINDON (Capt, Myers) .- Praise God, souls are being caught in the Gospel net here. During the past week, some of the right sort have sought and found Jesus. Real desperadoes in sin have surendered to Emmanuel, our great Commander-in-Chief. The publicans have begun to tell the old tale, "If this Salvation Army goes on progressing, we shall certainly have to give up our business," Our processions stir the whole town, glory to God we mean them to. On Saturday we went to bombard one of the out-posts of Beelzebub, a town called Purton. Great commotion, wouderful Influence. We are believing for a marvellous rumbling among the dry bones.
