Lollards Pit (1557)




William Whyte, a follower (Lollard) of John Wycliffe was burned at the stake here in1428. Thomas Bilney died here in 1531. Several more were burned here, mainly in 1557 and 1558.

Additional Information

The plaque is on the river bank by the bridge at Bishopsgate. The actual Pit was on the other side of the road, just past the bridge.
