Bede's Monastery Ruins (682)

The Venerable Bede probably transferred to this monastery at its opening when he was 9 years old. He remained until his death in 735. He is responsible for his history of England which is the main source for the period. He is known as the 'Father of English History'. He died here, but his remains are thought to have been removed to Durham Cathedral in the 11th Century. For more see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bede
